Today the city of Palms in Mallorca, Spain warmly welcomed the members of the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities’ family. As participants arrived to register for this five day conference, the scene is reminiscent of a family reunion. In some cases traveling continents to once again connect with old friends, mentors and colleagues, therapeutic community professionals unite to stimulate, support and challenge each other. There is no better setting than Mallorca, also known as the Island of Tranquility, in the heart of the Western Mediterranean, to create an exchange of ideas and experiences.
Palma de Mallorca, is a scenic port, filled with history, culture and beauty. From the 13th Century Cathedral to the Bellver Castle and Royal Palace, the atmosphere is perfect. Despite the cool springtime breezes, the warmth kindled by the smiles of TC family members ignites a fire of enthusiasm for the anticipated program.
Long known for its challenges and dialogues, the WFTC conference offers therapists, researchers, politicians, counselors and administrators the opportunity to replenish their spirits, challenge their positions and further the development of the Therapeutic Community model world-wide. For some the journey began over forty years ago while others have only recently heard of this effective intervention for the restoration of lives impacted by drug use.
As the TC family grows resources for struggling young people and their families are created. The message of hope for a drug free life is heard around the world.
Proyecto Hombre, the host organizing committee, welcomed participants from over 55 countries and promises an exceptional and stimulating congress.
Honored by the presence of Queen Sophia (la Reina), Luis del Olmo, President of Drug Committee North Spain and masters of ceremony, Bartomeu Catala, President of the conference and Monsignor William O’Brien, President of WFTC inaugurated the Congress at the Palma de Mallorca Auditorium. The evening concluded with the exquisite sounds of the Mallorca Symphony conducted by Paul Decker with his interpretations of Albeniz’s La Suite Espanola and La Sequnda Sinfonica by Rachmaninov. The universal appeal of music and the teamwork of a fine tuned orchestra provided a fitting model to the participants, of how the variety and uniqueness of people with different languages and culture, can blend together, in harmony. Let us begin this next movement with the focus, passion and joy requested of our conductors!
